Three types of fruits and vegetables were compared for antioxidant levels. This study was published in the “Journal Of Agricultural Food Chemistry In February 2003. The tested three types of growing methods, organic, sustainable and conventional. Conventional used herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers, sustainable used just fertilizers and organic of course uses neither.

The research team studied three antioxidant foods corn, strawberries and marion blackberries. Organic and sustainability grown foods were found to have a greater amounts of antioxidants by a wide margin. Levels of antioxidants in sustainability grown corn were 58.5% higher than conventionally grown corn. Sustainable grown marionberries had 50% more antioxidants than conventionally grown Strawberries a rather low antioxidant fruit only had 19% more in both organic and sustainable food.

Surprisingly sustainable grown foods had the highest antioxidant levels overall, indicating that organic may not be best for antioxidant protection. The addition of fertilizers seemed to be the answer in this study.

These plants produce flavonoids which are the phenolic chemicals which provide the antioxidant action in the body. Herbicides and pesticides are not only toxic to the human body in their own right but interfere with the growth of phenols in the fruits and vegetables. Phenols are the chemicals that protect the plant from disease and transfer that ability when the fruits and vegetable are eaten.

There are many powerful antioxidants in the food universe. All of these food centered antioxidant phytochemicals are constructed by nature in different ways. Antioxidants are mainly found in fruits and vegetables but can additionally be found in spices. As a class, fruit is the generally recognized category which contains more antioxidants per gram than any other frequently consumed food groupings.

Today several highly promoted antioxidant beverages include the “whats hot now antioxidant fruit” Examples of these popular fruits are acai, goji, pomegranate and mangosteen. While every one are excellent and comprise large concentrations of antioxidant phytonutrients, drinking a variety of fruits makes more sense. An antioxidant drink with a significant number of diverse antioxidant fruits and berries offers the body an assortment of phytonutrients from which to select. Individual fruit or even four to five fruit combination drinks do not give the body the complete spectrum of phytonutrients it may need.

Not many people consider the lowly apple, a highly active antioxidant fruit, but it is. The predominate phytochemicals in apples are quercetin, epicatechin and procyanidin. A familiar fruit is the pineapple, but did you know that it contains high quantities of bromelain and is filled with digestive enzymes and once more, other fruits do not contain these phytonutrients. One last example is the never spoken about antioxidant fruit the cantaloupe. Ounce for ounce it is the best supplier of vitamin A. This points out that each fruit has a different array of phytochemicals which are a great benefit to the human body. Sound judgment and research has shown me we need a variety of nutrition not just a single fruit source of antioxidants.

Dr Madeleine Mumcuoglu an Israeli scientist has been given the credit for first discovering the mechanism of action of the fruit of the black elder tree on colds and flu. Without getting into a long complicated science definition, she has found that if one can stop the virus from entering the cell the disease is automatically defeated. The black elder fruits high concentration of bioflavonoid seems to do exactly that.

According to Humbart Santillo, Master Heboligist. in his book Natural Healing With Herbs, he states, ”In large doses elderberry can act as a purgative and diuretic. Elder is used for urinary complaints, edema and rheumatic problems. The tea of the flowers is used as a diaphoretic to break fevers…Elder flowers are used in salves for skin disease”
